Accordion shutters are a great option for hurricane protection if you live in Fort Myers/Cape Coral area or elsewhere in Southwest Florida. They are convenient, easy to use, and offer a lot of value given all their benefits. Another reason they are popular is because they can be used to protect wide openings that some other shutters are not suitable for. For example, they can enclose and protect large patio openings, large lanais, porches, and extra-wide door openings. One question people frequently ask us when deciding if accordions will work is “What is the maximum span for accordion shutters?” So we answer that question below.
The maximum span of different accordion shutter systems may vary. So make sure to check with the specific installer you choose. For our Eurex Shutters PTX™ Accordion Hurricane system, the maximum span we recommend is between 30 to 40 feet.
Again the maximum height will vary from one accordion manufactures/installer to another. For our Eurex Shutters PTX™ Accordion Hurricane system, the maximum height is 13 feet.
In turn, accordion shutter systems can be used for quite large openings. This makes them a good fit for large patios, lanais, outdoor spaces and extra-wide stretches of glass, such as large doors and widows.
So if you need to enclose and/or protect an extra-wide opening then Accordion Shutters may be a good fit for you.
Alternative for large openings
Curious what other options are available for large openings? Hurricane screens are another good option for large openings. This is especially true if you prefer an automatic vs manual system because screens can be operated via electric motors. Hurricane screens can be installed up to a maximum width of 30 feet. They are also commonly used to protect outdoor spaces, such as patios, lanais and more.
