Can you use more than one type of hurricane shutter on a house? Is mixing and matching hurricane shutters okay? This is a question we get asked a lot by our customers looking to add storm shutters to their home. Some people say not to mix and match. But we say mixing and matching can help you accomplish a better solution for your home. At the very least, mixing and matching helps to protect your entire home.
This case study provides an example of successfully mixing and matching shutter types on a home in Fort Myers Florida. For this installation we combined our PTX™ Accordion Hurricane Shutters and PTX™ Roll Down Shutters to create the perfect storm solution for this homeowner.

The case for mixing and matching shutters
There are multiple situations where mixing and matching hurricane shutters on your home makes sense. We cover a few of the more common ones below.
First, mixing and matching hurricane shutter types on a home is sometimes a necessity. So if you want to protect your home you will need to mix and match. The biggest reason is that not all hurricane shutter types are suitable for all types of openings. For example, say you want to install Bahama shutters on your home’s windows. Well, Bahama shutters are only suitable as hurricane window coverings (and not suitable for doors). In this case you need to use a different type of shutter to protect your doors, etc. You could use Roll Down Shutters, Accordion Shutters, hurricane fabric, or storm panels to protect your doors. Or, you can install impact doors. Regardless, you will need to mix and matchdifferent storm products.
Other times, you may decide to install a certain type of hurricane shutter to make it easier to deploy before a storm. For instance, you could install manual shutters on the ground floor where it is easy to operate. And then you could install automatic shutters, such as electric roll down shutters on openings that are hard to reach or access. Or, you could use accordions on the first floor and electric roll down shutters on the openings that are hard to reach or access.
Lastly, you can mix and match as a tactic to stay within budget or just reduce cost. For instance, you may choose to install a decorative hurricane shutter, such as Bahama shutters on openings visible from the street. And then, maybe you save some money by installing a lower cost type of hurricane shutter, such as accordions or storm panels, in areas not visible from the street.
Regardless of the reason why, mixing and matching hurricane shutters is a good way to protect your entire home. At the same time, you can still achieve your design goals and preferences by strategically placing certain shutters in certain areas.
How we Mixed and Matched on this Installation
For this specific installation mixing and matching was more of a preference vs a necessity. The homeowner wanted to install Roll Down Shutters over their doors and accordion shutters on their windows. With that being said, the finished product shows how you can successfully mix and match two hurricane shutter types in order to meet your needs.
The solution they picked was a combination of PTX™ Accordion Hurricane Shutters and PTX™ Roll Down Shutters. Accordions were used for the windows and Roll Downs were used for the entry doors.
Colors can also help create a cohesive look around the home. The homeowner selected the same colors for both shutters so they looked cohesive. They also picked colors that matched their existing home’s color scheme very nicely. This helped the different types of shutters as well as the shutters and the house look like they all belonged together naturally.
As you can see in the images below the two shutter types work together very well.
