FAQ
Hurricane names are maintained and chosen by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There is a total of six lists of names, and these lists are rotated. This means one list is used every 6 years. The only time a name is not used again (in the next rotation) is if it is retired. In that case, that removed name is replaced with another name.
A hurricane name may be retired by the WMO if the storm with that name was especially bad and caused a high number of casualties or extraordinary level of damage.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) meets at the end of March, beginning of April each year. At the time of this article, the decision to retire names from the 2024 season has not been made. Major storms from the 2024 hurricane season included Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. These names have a good chance of being retired, but the final decision will be determined by the WMO.
No. None of the 2023 hurricane names were retired by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
