FAQ About Hurricane Panels

How much are hurricane panels?

Panels are considered the most economic form of hurricane storm protection. You should expect to pay $12 – $16/ SqFt. The cost varies due mainly to the material you choose (steel, aluminum or clear plastic). Learn more details about how much hurricane shutters cost.

Where do I get hurricane shutters?

In Southwest Florida you have 3 main options, which are a local hurricane shutter company, an online seller or a big-box store. Learn more about each option in our article “Where Can I Buy Hurricane Shutters.”

How do you install storm panels?

They are secured by fastening them to the structure of your home or business. They can be installed using either a frame or no frame. Learn more about how to install hurricane shutter panels.

Are hurricane panels a permanent storm shutter?

No. These panels are not permanent. They are what is considered removable hurricane shutters. You install them before a storm and uninstall them after the storm. And while some folks do leave them on for long periods of time this is generally not considered a good idea. This is because they create a fire hazard by blocking egress. In turn, they are typically removed and stored away when not in use.

What are Lexan hurricane panels?

The term “Lexan” is sometimes used interchangeably (whether correctly or not) to describe polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is a group of thermoplastic polymers. Lexan is a trade name owned by Sabic, a polymer company. Lexan hurricane panels are corrugated panels made from polycarbonate. This material is clear and lightweight while being extremely strong, impact resistant and stable in high temperatures.

In terms of their benefits as hurricane panels, they offer excellent strength and impact resistance. They are hurricane rated, Florida Product approved, and are able to withstand up to a category 5 hurricane. They are also clear and let natural light in your home when installed. The big benefit of this is that your house will not be “blacked out” and pitch dark during the day. This is beneficial if your power goes out.
