If you live in an area with severe weather, such as Florida then you understand that protecting your home and family is important. So if you are looking to add hurricane protection to your home with new windows then you may be wondering what is the difference in terms of impact windows vs storm windows. Even though their names make them sound like they are the same they are very different. In this guide we break down these two types of windows. Our goal is to inform you of the difference so you can make an informed buying decision.
Impact Windows
Hurricane impact windows are sometimes referred to as hurricane impact windows, hurricane proof windows, impact resistant windows, etc. They are a type of window system made specifically for hurricane prone areas. These windows can either replace your current windows (they are a type of replacement window) or be installed as new construction windows.
Impact windows are Florida product approved and meet the current Florida Building Code. They are constructed of impact glass (laminated glass). They also use heavy-duty, impact resistant frames, components, and glazings. In turn, they can take impacts without breaking. They may fracture, but this special glass will not break open and leave your home exposed.
They are constructed and tested to withstand the intense winds, extreme pressures, and flying debris that are common during a hurricane. As such, these windows offer hurricane protection without the need to cover your windows with hurricane shutters, storm panels, etc.

Storm Windows
Storm windows are glass inserts that are installed over your existing glass windows. Their main function is to provide insulation and stop drafts and heat/cold air from transferring through your windows.
So while they provide some protection for your glass windows they are not impact resistant. Their protection ability is limited to keeping out the elements, such as rain (or snow in colder areas) during less severe storms. They are constructed of traditional glass, which means they would break similar to regular windows if struck or impacted during a hurricane.
In turn, they are not suitable for hurricane protection. And they should not be used for hurricane protection purposes for those living in areas prone to extreme storms.
